Urinary incontinence gives a woman many problems and worries - it suppresses her psyche, reduces her performance, prevents her from being in public places, and also brings disharmony into her intimate life. And only 1! Of the 10–25 women suffering from urinary incontinence, they seek help from a doctor, and only 10–30% receive qualified medical care.

What causes urinary incontinence and how to deal with it? In order to answer these questions, it is necessary to understand that the reasons for this delicate problem may vary. Thus, there are several types of urinary incontinence in women:

  • stress - stress urinary incontinence. Stress incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine during moments of increased intra-abdominal pressure, which occurs during physical activity (weight lifting, walking, running), changes in body position, coughing, sneezing, laughing, while the woman has no urge to urinate. The most commonly noted type of incontinence occurs in 50–80% of cases;
  • imperative (urgent) urinary incontinence is characterized by the presence in a woman of a strong, irresistible urge to urinate, after which involuntary urination occurs. The urge occurs when a reflex contraction of the bladder or urethra occurs in response to changes in intra-abdominal pressure or irritation of the receptors of the bladder neck. Occurs in 10–15% of cases;
  • mixed urinary incontinence is detected in 15–20% of cases;
  • the share of all other types of incontinence accounts for about 5%.

It should be noted that stress urinary incontinence is most common among older women, especially those over 75 years of age - in approximately 50% of cases.

  • age. The risk of developing urinary incontinence increases with age. With every 5 years of postmenopausal life, the incidence of urinary incontinence increases by 30%;
  • pregnancy and childbirth. Pregnancy itself can have damaging effects on the pelvic floor, and the pelvic floor muscles can also be negatively affected by the process of physiological childbirth. As a result, urinary incontinence is more often diagnosed in women who have given birth than in nulliparous women, regardless of age. Among pregnant women, urinary incontinence is especially common and occurs in every third or more often;
  • surgical interventions affecting the pelvic organs;
  • obesity. It has been established that the presence of excess body weight increases the risk of developing urinary incontinence, in turn, weight loss can lead to a decrease in the severity of its symptoms, but the effectiveness of weight loss as a treatment method, unfortunately, has not been confirmed;
  • postmenopausal period and estrogen deficiency which can lead to weakening of the pelvic floor muscles;
  • muscle strain due to constipation, heavy lifting;
  • some diseases: connective tissue dysplasia, abdominal hernia, varicose veins of the lower extremities, pathology of the intervertebral discs, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, accompanied by cough.
