Returning home, the eloquent monk described the passionflower in his diaries, and according to legend, he himself The Vatican has approved the passion fruit flower as a symbol of the church.

How to grow passion fruit on a windowsill

If you want to know how passion fruit blooms, the photos will show luxurious blue-white flowers of a completely unusual shape. However, it is quite possible to grow such beauty on your native Russian windowsill, provided that you find an approach to an overseas plant.

So, passion fruit - growing at home is possible in two ways: cuttings and seeds. Cuttings can sometimes remain on the purchased fruit; the seeds can be pulled out of the pulp and dried, or you can purchase your favorite variety of passionflower seeds in the store.

Dried “seeds” can be kept for 3-4 days in a wet cloth, and then planted in a regular pot and calmly wait for the first sprouts. When your passion fruit produces 4-5 sprouts, you can transplant it into a larger pot. Passionflower is a classic liana; it grows very quickly, up to 10-15 centimeters per month, so it is important to provide it with good support. These can be metal or plastic grates or even stretched ropes for the passion fruit to cling to and crawl up.

Growing passion fruit does not like shade or too bright light; ideal windows for it are eastern and western. It is better to spray and water every other day. With proper care, in 2-3 months the tropical liana will entangle the entire window, and in a year or two it will begin to bloom.

How to choose the right passion fruit

Like many other fruits, passion fruit has many varieties, and each has its own characteristics. If you ask any search engine what passion fruit looks like, the photos will show round fruits of different sizes and shades: yellow, greenish, purple, smooth and wrinkled, but with the same orange-yellow flesh and many seeds.

Traditionally, yellow fruits are larger and contain more pulp, but purple ones are juicier and sweeter, especially if they are covered with large wrinkles. Passion fruit peel is poisonous, but there are also edible varieties, the peel of which is put into jelly and used to make candied fruits. However, in Russian realities it is impossible to figure out which variety is in front of you, so it is better not to risk it.

One of the most popular questions is how to eat passion fruit? Usually the fruits are cut in half and the pulp is eaten with a spoon, but if you have purchased a large and juicy fruit, you can use the islanders’ recipe - pierce the passion fruit, insert a straw and drink the juice.

You can store passion fruit in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, but there is some danger here - sugar accumulates in such fruits, so they are not recommended for diabetics. So don’t take care of the ripe passion fruit that lands on your table! Add it to salads, have a romantic dinner with fruit cocktails, make vitamin masks for your hair and face - after all, it’s simply impossible to resist the legendary fruit of passion.

This article will be devoted to another exotic fruit with an exotic name - passion fruit. However, this wonderful fruit, whose homeland is Brazil, has many scientific and popular names - edible passionflower, edible passion flower, granadilla, passion fruit (passion fruit), pashenfruit... Passion fruit is grown not only in Brazil, but also in India, Hawaii and Philippines, New Zealand, Australia and other tropical countries. Recently, passion fruit can be seen on the shelves of Russian supermarkets not only as part of multi-fruit juices, but also in fresh form, and therefore, I think it would be useful for you to learn a little about this and, in fact, how passion fruit is eaten.

Passion fruits grow on vines with woody stems, are round or ovoid in shape and can come in different flavors, colors (green, yellow, red, brown, purple) and sizes (from slightly larger than a pea to the size of a small melon) depending on the variety. And there are dozens, if not hundreds, of passion fruit varieties grown in the world.
Passion fruit peel is tough and inedible. It can be smooth or wavy. Again, depending on the variety and the degree of ripeness.
Passion fruit is eaten only when ripe. The fruits are even collected only when they, having ripened, fall from the branches of the vine to the ground.
The core of the passion fruit fruit is yellow-orange in color. It is juicy, incredibly aromatic and sweet and sour with a large number of seeds (about two and a half hundred of them). The taste of passion fruit is reminiscent of the taste of strawberries, plums, gooseberries, sea buckthorn, peach and apricot... Some kind of simply incredibly fantastic bouquet.
Red passion fruits are smaller, but more aromatic and sweet, and to prepare the healthiest and most aromatic juice, more sour yellow fruits are usually used. By the way, passion fruit is grown on an industrial scale precisely for its juice, which, among other things, has a mild calming effect, improves sleep, regulates blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Passion fruits contain a large amount of sugar, fiber, and proteins. Fresh passion fruit is rich in vitamins A, C, B, contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, phosphorus.
Passion fruit has a mild laxative effect and is useful for people suffering from liver and urinary tract diseases.

How to eat passion fruit?
Very simple. Passion fruits are cut in half and the pulp is carefully scooped out with a spoon along with the seeds, which are also edible. However, their abuse can cause drowsiness, so passion fruit should be consumed in moderation, without binge eating. In addition, people prone to allergies should also consume passion fruit with caution. And people suffering from diabetes need to know that several days of storage in a warm place significantly increases the sugar content in fruits.
Passion fruit pulp can also be added to sauces and fruit salads, to desserts - creams, yoghurts and ice cream... Passion fruit juice is used to prepare sauces for seafood and salad dressings.
When purchasing passion fruit, choose fruit that is heavy and wrinkled. It is these characteristics that are signs of ripeness, and not color and size, which, as we have already found out, depend only on the variety.

  • if the fruit is suspiciously light, then its core has dried out and is not worth buying. Even a small fruit should be heavy;
  • yellow fruits are not as sweet as purple ones.

The smooth-skinned fruits are unripe, but can be purchased. At home, put them in a paper bag and leave them to ripen for several days. Ripe passion fruit can be stored for 5-7 days in a cool place. Peeled pulp can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. The pulp is frozen with sugar for the winter, so all the beneficial substances are preserved in it.

Growing passion fruit at home

Passion fruit can be grown at home from seeds or cuttings. The seeds must be fresh; dry ones will not sprout. Buy a well-ripened fruit and extract the seeds, choosing the best ones.

Growing from seeds consists of several stages:

  • thoroughly clean the seeds from the pulp and place them on a cloth, rub gently until the juice sacs open;
  • Rinse and dry the seeds twice. Do not dry the seeds in the sun, just lightly blot them with a napkin and leave them on a dry cloth;
  • prepare the soil: combine compost, sand and garden soil in a 1:1:1 ratio;
  • choose a container that is not very deep, fill it with soil and make small furrows in it, the distance between which should be 5 cm;
  • plant the seeds in the furrows at a distance of 1 cm from each other, sprinkle with a thin layer of soil;
  • water the seeds and place the container in a warm place, periodically moisten the soil;
  • When the sprouts sprout and grow to 20 cm, transplant them to a permanent place.

Growing using cuttings is a very simple method and in most cases gives good results. Planting stages:

  • choose a cutting; you only need to cut young shoots that have at least 3 buds. Cut the cuttings obliquely, above the lower bud;
  • prepare a mixture of fertile soil and fine sand in a ratio of 1 to 3, mix thoroughly;
  • select a deep container and fill it with soil, immediately plant the cutting after cutting and create a moist environment for it. To do this, you can build a small greenhouse from a box-shaped frame covered with a polymer film;
  • Place the finished greenhouse in a sunny place with high humidity. After 2 weeks, the cuttings will take root;
  • transplant the cuttings with roots to a permanent place.

Care

Passion fruit is a rather capricious plant and requires careful care, which consists of regular watering, fertilizing and installing support for fast-growing vine branches.

Watering is very important, because passion fruit naturally lives in a humid climate. The plant needs to be watered frequently and thoroughly. The soil should not dry out. If the room where passion fruit grows does not have very high humidity, watering should be done once a week.

Passion fruit loves fertilizers very much, so you need to feed it often and generously. Fertilizers begin to be applied in spring, summer, and at the beginning of autumn, fertilizing is carried out once. For passion fruit, slow-acting organic matter with a low nitrogen content and chicken manure in granules are suitable.

Passion fruit is a liana-shaped plant, so it needs strong support. As soon as tendrils begin to appear on the vine, carefully tie them with a thin rope and tie them to a support. Place the side branches opposite the main stem.

Pruning is mandatory; it should be done once every 2 years, in the spring before flowering begins. When pruning, dry, weak and old shoots are removed. Old branches cannot be cut off at the base; you need to leave a few buds, because new shoots can grow from them.

Passion fruit is a beautiful plant that will delight you with evergreen leaves and sweet aromatic fruits. Be sure to include fruits in your diet, and your body will be very grateful to you.

Passion fruit or passion fruit(“peshen fruit” or passion fruit in English) is a delicious tropical fruit that is quite often found on the shelves of markets and shops in Asia.

Nowadays passion fruit is grown in tropical and subtropical climates almost everywhere (in America, Asia, Australia, Oceania and even in the relatively cool climate of England). Homeland of Stratus flower (scientific name of passion fruit from the Latin Passiflora edulis) - South America, where the familiar name "passion fruit" comes from. This is what this fruit is called in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru.

Why "passion fruit"?

The name comes from mara kuya (can mean "food in a bowl") in the Tupi Indian language. The Tupi language was widely spoken in Brazil, but is now considered a dead language. The Tupi language did not have a written language and was essentially a collection of dialects, so it is difficult to say unequivocally what the name of the fruit originally sounded like: passion fruit or maracuja, or maracuja.

In English speaking countries passion fruit is called passion fruit(fruit of passion), which has more to do with the flowers of these plants than with the fruit itself. In the 16th century, a strange flower that came to Europe became a visual religious symbol of the passion of Christ and the crucifixion itself. For which it received the scientific name Passiflora or Passion flower (“passion flower”).
