Why do fingernails curl upward? Why do fingernails curl? Wax mask with essential oil

It is impossible to imagine beautiful and well-groomed feet without healthy nails. But they are often subjected to mechanical and chemical stress, which leads to deformation.

Deformation of the nail plate quite a common occurrence. Many adults, as well as children, suffer from this problem.

Nail deformation is a process in which a change in the structure of the nail plate occurs due to external, internal influences or due to some kind of injury.

Differences between a healthy nail and a diseased one:

Ingrown nails and fungal infections

How does deformation of the nail plates manifest?

Pigmented stripes on the nail

In some cases, nail removal will be indicated. It can be partial or complete. There are several methods for removing nails:

Surgical;

Chemical;

Laser.

Ingrown nail

Then contact an experienced specialist as soon as possible so that he can prescribe you high-quality and effective treatment. If a hematoma forms under the nail, be sure to make a puncture to release blood. Instruments must be completely sterile to prevent nail inflammation.

Most often, patients neglect treatment, thereby worsening their disease.

Treating deformed toenails at home

And if you are very worried about the deformation of your toenails, and you cannot get to the doctor in the near future, then the following recipes will help you soothe the irritation and pain.

Infusion with celandine.

It is made at the rate of 100 mg of herb per 4 liters of water. Bring water to a boil and immediately pour this water over the prepared raw materials. Leave for about an hour. Apply such lotions to sore spots for 15–30 minutes, every day for 3 weeks. Then they take a break for 1 month and repeat the course.

healthy and fungal nails

Or you can lubricate the sore spot with Kalanchoe juice, celandine juice, an onion cut in half, and eucalyptus oil.

These can be used internally herbal infusions:

1) nettle decoction;

2) calamus decoction;

3) a decoction of string;

4) decoction of St. John's wort;

5) decoction of elecampane.

All these herbs can be purchased at any pharmacy. Read the instructions for their use on the packaging.

The main thing is not to lose your positive attitude! Strengthen your immunity! Cheer up! And don't give up!

A poor diet, an unbalanced or inappropriate diet, or skipping lunch or dinner may be a consequence of poor nail condition. It is important that proteins and microelements enter the body in the required quantities. It will take about a month to six months to treat curled nails. It's worth starting with protein. This element is vital for the body in general and for nails in particular. Per kilogram of a person's weight, 1-1.5 grams of protein should be consumed daily. The diet should be changed in favor of foods such as chicken, meat, eggs, milk, and sea fish.

The second most important element for the body, which is missing if nails curl, is magnesium. You need to consume up to 400 mg of magnesium per day. The difficulty is that it is quite difficult to satisfy the need for this microelement using food alone. Meat is the richest in magnesium. But in order for the body to receive the required amount of microelement, you need to eat up to 2 kilograms of meat per day. Therefore, the lack of magnesium is compensated with the help of drugs, which can be purchased at any pharmacy.

The lack of calcium, the third element necessary for healthy nails, can be compensated for by fermented milk products. The body should receive approximately 800 mg of calcium per day.

The basis of healthy nails is vitamins

To improve the condition of your nails, you should increase your intake of vitamins B, C, E, A. The key to strong and beautiful nails is vitamin B. It is recommended to include brewer's yeast, milk and eggs in your diet. It is the lack of vitamin B that makes nails curled and brittle.

If the nail looks old, has lost its attractive appearance, or begins to curl, the body may not have enough vitamin C. To do this, you should eat more citrus fruits and various berries, such as gooseberries.

If your nails grow poorly and begin to curl, you need to eat more legumes, nuts, and oils, which contain vitamin E. It is responsible for the growth and youth of your nails.

There are no beautiful nails if there is a lack of vitamin A in the body. If the poor condition of the nails, peeling and curling of them are accompanied by frequent diseases and inflammatory processes, then the immune system is weakened. Vitamin A, which is found in carrots, vegetables, and butter, will help strengthen your immune system in general and get rid of curled nails.

Healthy nails grow quite slowly and in a week they can grow only 1-2 mm. If we talk about complete renewal of the nail plate, then this happens no earlier than within six months. Throughout a person's life, it can be noted that nails grow at different rates. In childhood, nails grow faster, but in older age they grow much slower. Nail growth will also be affected by the time of year. When it's cold, nails grow very slowly, and when it's warm, it's the opposite. Today, many women may encounter such an unpleasant problem as bending of nails during long-term growth, and in some cases they even begin to crack and break. Why is this happening? This is exactly the topic that this article will be about.

Reasons for changing the shape of the nail

The reasons why nails begin to change their shape can be very different: poor nutrition, dryness, fragility and damage to the structure of the nail plate. When nails grow, they can all bend or just one. A variety of mechanical damage can also contribute to this. In the damaged area, the nail begins to lose its elasticity and density, after which it breaks and begins to bend. If the nails are thin and brittle, then this can also cause the nails to bend. This is caused by the edge of the nail being thinner than the nail plate and lacking the ability to hold the nail straight. This usually happens if the body does not have enough vitamins or you use detergents without using gloves.

Also, various viral diseases can greatly affect the shape of the nail. But in most cases, bending of nails can only be explained by the individual characteristics of the body. In this case, even the strongest and most beautiful nails, when they reach a certain length, begin to bend or curl into a tube. Then you have only one choice: grow your nails to a certain length and no more.

If the shape has changed due to the influence of a fungus, then the situation can be corrected only after complete recovery. If you had a bad manicure, then you should go to a specialist and have several procedures done so that your nails regain their shape. In addition, you should pay attention to your diet and eliminate harmful foods and habits from your diet. Start consuming vitamin complexes, minerals and everything that strong and beautiful nails lack. Also, nails may begin to curl due to insufficient moisture for them. Therefore, you should always use creams or oils that would sufficiently moisturize not only the skin of your hands, but also the nail plates themselves.

Strengthening nails

Most experts say so. What is very good is to strengthen your nails with gel or acrylic. By themselves, these materials do not bend and do not allow the nail to do this, and we can say that the nails are to some extent glued to the artificial turf. Gradually, it will be possible to stop using these materials as your nails will continue to grow straight for a long time. But it happens that the nails begin to bend again and then the procedure must be repeated again.

It is also very useful to strengthen your nails with special baths with the addition of iodized salt. Keep your nails in the bath until the water has cooled completely. After this, you need to completely dry your hands and rub the special nourishing oil or cream that you use into the nail plate.

To prevent your nails from bending, do not forget to regularly care not only for them, but also for your entire body, taking vitamins, playing sports and controlling your diet.

I have very dry skin, hair and nails, and if I learned to cope with the first two points relatively quickly, then I struggled with the third for years, until this fall.
Due to the dryness, the nail plate curled so much that in the morning the phalanges of the fingers hurt! What you see in the photo is not the worst case yet.
In places of particularly strong bends, longitudinal and transverse cracks arose, which led to through faults. During the heating season, when the level of air humidity dropped sharply, the situation worsened to the point that sometimes I could not grow my nails at all, because... these cracks appeared at the very base. Due to the twisting, the decorative coating also cracked; top dryers were especially sensitive to this, as they literally broke at the edges, carrying with them the colored varnish, too, which reduced the durability of the manicure.
In addition, dry, dehydrated nails become inelastic, and therefore any mechanical damage automatically leads to chipping. I partially combated this with the help of collagen, but even that did not eliminate the problem completely.
I was tired of putting up with this state of affairs and I was determined to find a way to stop the curling and brittleness of my nails. And I found it!

First, I’ll tell you about the methods that I used before. Perhaps one of my intermediate options will be the most convenient and effective for you.

Minimum length and truncated shape

Trimming your nails to zero is one option that some people have had success with. And it really helps someone, but not me. Even with a free edge length of 1 mm, the nail plate is mercilessly curled.
If the nails do not bend inwards much and evenly on each side, then you can try cutting out a square that slightly tapers towards the end.

But this method didn’t work for me either. First, I prefer the traditional rectangle. Secondly, the nails on my index and thumbs curl more than others, and they do it mainly on one side, i.e. changing the shape will not particularly affect the appearance of the nail plate. Thirdly, this method does not solve the problem of fragility.

Moisturizing bases and wax

The first thing that comes to mind for any person faced with dry nails is moisturizing bases. I also naively believed that this kind of means could radically change the situation, but alas. No special The bases and the waxing did not live up to expectations.

Night cream for nails

This unpleasant procedure was actively recommended to me in all the manicure communities where I turned with requests for help. It doesn't hurt, but it doesn't feel very good. This method still partially reduces curl, by about 50%, but another problem arises. Apparently, my nails absorb so much cream overnight that every time they come into contact with water, they spread out too much and begin to flare. Something like this photo with a “wonderful” manicure.

After some time, of course, they return to normal, but I don’t like this side effect at all.
The main thing is to avoid dyes in the composition of products! I once applied sea buckthorn cream and walked around with red nails for a week.

Gel polish

Bearing in mind that after a manicure with the three-phase method of applying gel polish, my nails did not curl or break (well, with such and such a number of layers), I decided to use the same method, but on the inner surface of the nails. I don’t want to cover my nails on top, as is usually done, my length grows very quickly and such a coating would have to be redone every 5-7 days. Plus, removing gel polish always caused a lot of damage to my nails.
However, this method also turned out to be not for me. The first layer of gel polish did not work; the nails remained soft and continued to curl, although not as much as before. The second coat improved the situation a little.
ety consolidated the result. Yes, the nails became completely unbending and strengthened, but the thickness of the resulting coating was impressive, especially in the center. I have a very pronounced arch (arc-shaped bend) of the nail, so when applied, the gel polish quickly flowed down to the very middle, leaving the edges half-bare.
In addition, due to the base/top, the free edge of the nail became transparent. In principle, this problem can be solved by using translucent colored gel polish, which is usually chosen as the basis for a French manicure.
The durability of such a coating is questionable. Everything will depend on your nails, the quality of the gel polish and your lifestyle. Personally, for me it lasted from a couple of days to a week, and then flew off in one piece.
The convenience of adjusting the grown part of the nail also raises doubts, because applying gel polish again in 2-3 layers on a strongly grown free edge will lead to a thickening of the already large previous coating.

Acrylic Powder

One day, having once again repaired a strong crack along the edge, I noticed that in the place where there was a patch of acrylic powder and glue, the nail curled up less into a tube. Then I decided to check whether this design, applied to the back surface of the nail, would keep it from curling. The result amazed me! The nails were securely fixed and protected from chipping! I even deliberately beat them on the edge of the table, yeah, with all my might, and they didn’t break O_O Fantastic.
The scheme is simple:

  • Steam your nails until they are straightened to the desired width. I usually use cream, it's faster.
  • Remove all the cream and degrease the back of the nail.
  • Apply a thin layer of glue for tips and rhinestones, immediately dip the nail into acrylic powder and remove it after a couple of seconds. There is no need to twist it back and forth, otherwise lumps may appear.
  • Use a brush to shake off excess powder and cover it all with regular varnish.

Combined method

Very often, gel polish and acrylic powder are used in tandem, but they are usually applied to the front side of the nail.

  • Degrease the nail plate.
  • Cover with a layer of base for gel polish, without drying it in a lamp, sprinkle with powder on top.
  • Having brushed off the excess, it is sent for polymerization in a lamp.
  • Cover with a layer of gel top.

Nothing can break such armor... but it is difficult to remove, and there will be problems with adjustments as it grows. Use on the back of the nails is questionable. Therefore, I will leave this method to those who constantly do manicures with gel polish.

I hope everyone finds something useful in this article. Strong nails to you.

In the warm season, every woman dreams of a perfect pedicure, which she can proudly show off to others by wearing open sandals. However, if the toenail curls, it is quite problematic to get a beautiful pedicure. Curling of toenails is a problem familiar to many representatives of the fairer sex. What is its reason? You can find out about this by reading the information below.

By the general appearance of the nail plates one can judge the state of a person’s health. Ideally, nails on your toes, as well as on your hands, should be smooth, even and shiny. If they unexpectedly change their shape, begin to curl up and are difficult to trim, this should alert their owner. This condition of the nail plates may indicate various pathological changes in the body. To understand why toenails curl, you need to consider in detail the main causes of this defect.

The nail plates on the toes may curl due to a genetic predisposition. If a woman’s closest relatives suffer from the same problem as she does, then heredity should be blamed for the ugly shape of her nails. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to correct the appearance of the nail plates in this case. There is an opinion that regular nail extension procedures can slightly correct their shape and make them smoother and more attractive. However, in order to eliminate the defect, an experienced nail technician must build up the toenail plates.

The curling of the toenail is often preceded by mechanical trauma to the nail plate or its lunula. In this case, the surface of the nail can not only become thick and uneven, but also darken. Injury occurs not only when hitting a toe, but also when wearing tight or uncomfortable shoes, so for those who dream of a perfect pedicure, it is important to purchase high-quality closed shoes that fit properly.

If the toenail curls up, the reason for this may be a lack of essential vitamins, macro- and microelements in the human body. Correction of nutrition, as well as taking multivitamin complexes prescribed by the attending physician, will help solve the problem.

Curling of the nails on the fingers of the lower extremities can signal problems in the functioning of the internal organs. In order not to miss the development of any pathology, if there is a sudden change in the shape of the plates, an examination of the body should be done.

Some types of fungal infections can also cause the toenails to curl. Antimycotic drugs prescribed by a doctor will help eliminate the problem.

Nails often curl due to a simple lack of fluid in the body. To correct the situation, a woman should try to drink at least 1.5 liters of water daily (in hot weather - 2 liters), and also regularly lubricate the nail plates with any moisturizing oil.

In older people, curling toenails occurs due to age-related changes in the body and is often not associated with the development of diseases, vitamin deficiency or moisture deficiency. It is almost impossible to straighten the nail plates in adulthood, however, if you regularly treat them with emollients and do not neglect professional pedicures, you can significantly prolong youth marigolds

Knowing why toenails curl, you can prevent the development of this problem in yourself. Proper nutrition, proper drinking regime, regular visits to doctors and wearing comfortable shoes will be the key to maintaining the beautiful shape of the nail plates for a long time.

This is probably the structure of the nails, if you grow your nails an inch, I think they definitely won’t curl up into a tube, and the shape can be corrected with a nail file. I like long nails, but after reaching a certain length they start to curl inward. Definitely vitamins A and E. And, although there are special vitamin complexes for nails and hair, I prefer natural products. Does anyone know what else, besides calcium, affects the growth and health of nails?

It seems to me that the change in the shape of the nail occurs from a lack of some substances.

All the procedures you described are good, but this will not affect the shape of the nails in any way.

By the way, I noticed that after contact with water, the nail plate is leveled.

At first the plate will turn yellow, but this unsightly tint will disappear overnight.

Iodine also helps a lot not only in baths, but also in its pure form. It should be applied at night every day.

You can apply the juice twice a day. It is not necessary to rub it into the plate or hold your fingers in it; you can simply dip the tips of your nails into the pulp of the cut half of a lemon.

Then we tried placing a small plate under the corner so that the corner could not pierce it, and when the nail grew, its shape changed. Maybe, unfortunately, but I do not accept nail extensions (and hair, by the way, too). I don’t see the point in giving substantial sums of money to supplement (or replace) what is given by nature. And only 2 nails on each hand. That’s why I rarely grow long ones, I make do with medium lengths.

If you know exactly why your fingernails curl and are sure that this is not related to internal diseases, then these methods can be used independently at home.

If your nails used to be straight, but now you don’t know why they are bent, then the problem is not hereditary.

Keep your finger in this infusion until it cools down.

Heksichek, your experience and feedback are very valuable. Please write, if it’s not difficult and you know, the name of the base for the treatment of peeling nails from curling.

The beautiful narrow shoes are forgotten.

This problem started for me about 10 years ago, when I started actively typing on the keyboard. Could it be a lack of moisture? I also encountered this problem. Thus, you can try to eliminate this defect, including at home. Internal diseases of the body. First of all, these are vitamin deficiency and age-related changes.

Yes, what Dubinushka said about hair may be stupid, but it’s a common opinion. This was not in St. Petersburg and for a long time. And this was said after 3 removals. They removed me, but what’s the point... Girls, who has encountered such a problem, tell me!

All my life my nails have curled wildly, even if the free edge is only 1mm.
with or without nail polish. Moreover, not all nails curl, but mainly those on the left hand. My nails are naturally thin, but at the same time they are quite hard and break mainly when they are square. You can't call them weak and soft. They delaminate only from unsuccessful filing and unscrupulous polishing of the end. I constantly moisturize the nail plate with waxes, creams, oils, and do baths, but to no avail. Nails become more well-groomed, but still look like tubes. I once bought Smart Enamel polish to thicken my nails and it gave a wonderful result. I used the varnish as a base in two layers for the color coating. My nails have really become thicker. This was especially noticeable during regrowth. There was a wave running down my nails. You could see where the new thicker plate was and where the old thin one was. The “old stuff” grew back completely and was cut off in 5 months. New strong nails began to grow by leaps and bounds and stopped curling. They have grown to a length I have never had before with almost 1cm of free edge. My nail bed has lengthened a little. I was crazy) Then the polish ran out, and I started using “Smart Enamel” for nail growth, from which my nails began to curl a little. Then I bought a new bottle of thickener and resumed use, although the effect decreased. After some time, after reading positive reviews about the Mertz laser file, I purchased it and tried it. It was a disaster. The nails were so split that I had to cut the entire length down to the root. Nails have become thin and weakened. For two months I didn’t paint my nails with anything at all, not even medicated varnishes, so that they could rest. Every day I took special salt baths from DNC. They sell ready-made salt mixtures with oil, herbs, ants, and special oil liquids for peeling nails. In addition to baths, I rubbed waxes, oils, creams into my nails and cuticles many times every day. At night, I generously lubricated my hands with cream, applied it under my nails, and filled the cuticles with oil. I drank a lot of water a day and adjusted my diet. Hoping for the best, I resumed using the thickener, but did not achieve a positive result because... the effect disappeared completely. At this point, the nails have become as thin as before starting to use this drug. Apparently, initially the improvement was only temporary. At the moment, the layering has disappeared, the nails are again thin and hard, outwardly healthier, but the curling has returned, despite all the manipulations. When I take a bath, my nails straighten and become as smooth as those of mere mortals, but I can’t fix them in this state. If you have time to paint them in this “unfolded” form, after drying they will look a little better than usual, but nothing more. Now I'm using Dance Legend Spa Top, a thin nail restorer, but it's too early to talk about the results.

Based on personal experience, I have created my own (!) list of reasons for curling nails:

1) Heterogeneity of the nail bed.
My left hand nails suffer more from curling. She has more curled nails: the nail on the thumb, index finger, little finger. On the little finger, the nail began to curl after the nail bed “took off” a little, i.e. shortened. I do not know why. The nails on my thumb and index finger have curled for as long as I can remember. The most amazing thing is on my index finger. On it, the nail curls only from one corner and this is very noticeable. I noticed that the nail bed on this nail is higher on one corner and lower on the other. Where it is above the twisting there is no, where below it is on the face. The nail on this side simply does not have enough support. All my attempts to lengthen the nail bed on this finger have so far led to the fact that it has lengthened from the angle where everything was fine, and where it “breaks off” everything is still the same. has not yet had time to grow. On the right hand, only the thumbnail curls for the same reason. The rest of the nails are fine.

2) Thin nails.
I have very thin nails. In this case, grinding, which I abused at one time, is absolutely contraindicated. When your nails are as thin as mine, making them even thinner is stupid, because... they will curl even tighter. One day I slammed the heavy iron gate door with all my might, forgetting to remove my finger. Then she bit the finger of her other hand right into the cuticle with the stapler. Result: two wavy and pitted “facs” (two nails of the middle fingers), like the road to Belyov. The uneven surface was a real eyesore for me. I started polishing one nail, followed by everyone else for company, and off I went. After polishing, my nail plate begins to “peele” and then peel. Even after polishing with wax.

3) Excessive filing of side ridges and nails from the sides.
This cup did not pass me by either. One of the “faks” is growing crookedly. Apparently he is so traumatized by the incident with the iron door that he wants to escape from his finger. For a long time and persistently I cut out the desired shape, filing the nail on one side and achieved the desired result. Then, out of sporting interest, I began to cut out others, but it got worse. On the side where I filed, the skin began to peel off a little from the nail. Having lost support on one side, the nail began to curl. Also, the situation was aggravated by my mania for not just filing, but sometimes cutting off the nail folds with scissors. That's how much skin could be cut off to the maximum, that's how much I cut off. It seemed to me that it was so beautiful, but my nails were losing support again. I stopped trimming the rollers and started applying and intensively rubbing the oil not only into the cuticle, but also into them. Now the rollers look more aesthetically pleasing, they are well moisturized, and you don’t even need to file them slightly. They have noticeably tightened up and now the nails have something to hold on to.

3) Overdried nail plate.
For several years, when I didn’t know the basic rules of manicure, I didn’t use a base and applied colored polishes to bare nails. Naturally, they turned yellow, were not protected from chemicals, dried out and therefore curled. Sometimes the twisting process was even physically felt immediately after painting. The lack of proper nail care: moisturizing, nutrition, etc. contributed. Poorly chosen nail polish also dries out your nails. I love glitter and often remove it with foil. The more often I soak my nails like this, the worse it affects their condition.

4) Inappropriate base/varnish/drying.
This also happens. For example, Belvedere healing varnishes are not suitable for me. After application, the nails curl immediately. The Inm Out The Door dryer only curls my nails when I either apply it too generously, or the layers of colored varnish underneath haven’t dried, or there are too many layers and it’s hard on my nails from this design. By the way, the more layers on the nails, the greater the likelihood of curling. But Inm Northern Lights is absolutely beautiful, although it differs only in the presence of sparkles. Everything is always perfect with her and does not twist. Just don't shake it. Sometimes twisting is affected not only by one of the individual means, but by all of them together in some specific combination. All this is determined by trial and error, and very individually.

Many resources mention general dehydration of the body and excessive length of nails as reasons. This is not my case, so I cannot comment. There are probably other factors that I may have missed or not realized. I hope my post will be quite informative and useful for those who have pain. Om mani padme hum.

The main reasons for bending nails

The nail plate can bend down or up for various reasons. Most often, this phenomenon occurs due to the development of some serious problem. To eliminate it, it is important to determine the true cause of the bending of the nails in an adult or child.

Curling your nails down

Reasons for curling fingernails downward in a child or adult:

  • genetic feature of the human body. To eliminate a defect caused by this reason, experts believe that it is necessary to systematically do nail extensions;
  • If the lunula area is injured, the nail may begin to grow bent and deformed. If a specialist gives a woman incorrect extensions, pathology of the nail plate may also occur;
  • the use of low-quality varnishes and means for removing them greatly dries out the surface of the fingernails, which is why they begin to bend down;
  • The nails may bend inward due to internal characteristics of the body. For example, a lack of vitamins and age-related changes can lead to curling nails. Such a defect, especially in old age, is difficult to eliminate, but possible;
  • liver disease or the development of fungus on the nails also cause bending and curling of the nail plates;
  • Problems in the functioning of internal organs make the nails thinner, as they no longer receive the necessary nutrients and fluid.

To prevent your nails from curling, it is important not to wait until they grow too large. It is imperative to systematically carefully trim your nails. It is also necessary to select only high-quality and natural products for the care of nails, cuticles and hand skin.

Curling your nails up

Fingernails can curl not only downwards or inwards, but also upwards.

The nail plates begin to bend upward for the following reasons:

  1. Due to poor nutrition. An unbalanced and harmful menu leads to the fact that nails begin to lack the necessary nutrients and vitamins. Also, harmful foods lead to liver problems and have a bad effect on the functioning of the entire body. If malfunctions occur in the human body, the nails, skin and hair are the first to suffer. Therefore, it is important to try to eat only healthy foods - vegetables, fruits, drink freshly squeezed juices and fruit drinks.
  2. Too much fragility. Nails also break due to a lack of vitamins and minerals, especially calcium, magnesium or zinc. They are the main building material of healthy and strong nail plates. To prevent brittleness of marigolds, it is recommended to eat calcined cottage cheese, drink fermented milk products, and adhere to only a healthy diet.
  3. The plate is too dry. If nails that are too long begin to curl, they do not have enough water. To eliminate dehydration, moisturizing creams and oils are used for the plates and cuticles.
  4. Due to damage to the nail layer. The structure of the nail can be damaged due to improper care or poorly performed manicure. Often the nail layer is damaged by an iron file. In the hands of a non-specialist, such a tool leads to thinning and damage to the nail, as a result of which it begins to bend.
  5. The development of a viral infection in the body. Viral diseases also cause changes in the shape of the nail plates. Under the influence of viruses, they become thin, cannot hold their shape and begin to curl. To eliminate this pathology, it is important to cure the virus, as well as trim the nails as they grow.

Often, a child’s nails begin to bend in different directions due to the influence of a fungal infection. It is important to show your baby to a dermatologist or mycologist. The specialist will carefully examine the problem and prescribe effective treatment for the disease. Once the fungus is cured, your nails will become healthy, strong and able to maintain their shape.

If the nail of an adult or child is damaged, it becomes less elastic, loses its density, and as it grows back, it begins to bend and curl upward.

Most often, too thin and brittle nails begin to curl upward. The edges of the nail, which lack vitamins, are susceptible to this phenomenon.

If a person uses detergents without gloves to clean the house, his nails may also begin to curl after a while. Since such cleaning products negatively affect the structure and strength of the nail.

Briefly about fixing the problem

To eliminate hereditary bending of the nail plates on the hands, it is recommended to take medicinal baths with rubbing in healing agents. Massaging the nail ridges also helps a lot.

Strengthening bath for curled nails in a child or adult:

  1. Add a tablespoon of salt and five drops of essential oil to two liters of water.
  2. Soak your fingers in a warm bath for 10 minutes.
  3. After the procedure, wash your hands under the tap, pat dry with a napkin and apply a special product for hands and strengthening plates and cuticles.

You can add a few drops of iodine to the bath.

You can also strengthen your nails with lemon juice. Rub it into the surface and wait until it dries completely. After consulting with a specialist, you can rub orange, lemon, pine, burdock, linseed or castor essential oil into the plates.

If you notice that a child's or adult's fingernail is bent, to cure it, you can massage the cuticle and the nail itself using essential oils or vitamin creams. Massage actions increase blood flow and create all the conditions for the healing substances of the cream or oil to have the most positive effect on the nail plates.

Knowing the reasons why fingernails bend, you can eliminate the problem and make the plates durable and beautiful. If a pathology occurs in a child, show him to a specialist. The doctor will conduct a study and tell you what needs to be done to strengthen your nails. If the problem occurs on the nails of an adult, it is recommended to listen to the advice of a manicurist.

Why do nails curl?

Plate deformation can occur in different ways:

  • take the shape of a trapezoid;
  • become covered with depressions or bulges, twisting to a certain side;
  • become soft and flat, curl into a tube;
  • touch the cuticle, growing into its corners from the outside and twisting in the opposite direction.

Such an unpleasant phenomenon as bending the nail up or down can affect the tips of the plate or its entire surface.

Possible bends of the plate are shown in the photo.

Reasons for curling nails downwards

Several main factors can cause the plate to bend.

  1. Hereditary predisposition. In this case, the nails curl on the index and middle fingers.
  2. Injuries, bruises of the nail plate, improper extension.
  3. Use of low-quality materials for manicure (varnishes, means for removing them). Such procedures greatly dry out the stratum corneum, which leads to its depletion and bending down.
  4. Fungal infections.

Diseases of the internal organs can also affect the condition of the marigolds. Due to a malfunction of vital systems, the plates stop feeding normally and become thinner.

Why do nails bend upward?

Often the plate is twisted upward, for certain reasons.

  1. Nutrition. An incorrect diet can lead to nails not receiving enough essential vitamins and minerals. In addition, harmful products greatly affect the functioning of internal organs, failures in which negatively affect the condition of the nails.
  2. Shortage of building components– zinc, magnesium, calcium. A lack of minerals has a detrimental effect on the appearance of nails; they become brittle, thin and curl upward.
  3. Dehydration of the stratum corneum. Long nails usually suffer from lack of moisture.
  4. Damage to the nail. Occurs due to improper care or inexperienced use of nail files, especially iron ones. They can severely injure the stratum corneum and cause its thinning, which leads to twisting and deformation.

Viral infections can also cause distortion of the nail shape.

What to do if the nail plate curls up?

You can eliminate curling of the nail plate using traditional medicine recipes and following the recommendations of a specialist.

How to fix a bent nail using folk remedies

To prevent nails from bending in different directions, you need to eliminate their fragility, fragility and weakness. There are several effective recipes for this.

Wax mask with essential oil

Melt 20 g of wax in a steam bath. Add 4-7 drops of olive or coconut oil to the hot liquid. Dip your fingers into the warm consistency for 2-3 seconds, then immediately place your hands under a cold stream of water. There is no need to remove any mask particles remaining on your fingers. They will penetrate into weakened areas and nourish them with essential microelements and vitamins.

It is better to do the procedure at night. The course of treatment is 5–7 procedures (1 session every 3 days).

Revitalizing red pepper mask

Mix ground pepper (1/2 tbsp.) with 10 ml of boiling water and 1 tbsp. l. baby cream Place the ingredients in a steam bath, stirring continuously for 5 minutes. After cooling, spread the creamy mixture over the entire surface of the nail and under its regrown part. The cuticle also needs to be treated. Leave for 20–25 minutes and rinse with warm water.

This mask helps increase blood circulation, stimulates growth and restores the weakened plate. It is recommended to do the procedure no more than once a month, so as not to provoke excessive dryness of the stratum corneum.

Olive oil baths

You will need 100 g of olive extract. Dip your fingers into the heated liquid for 10–12 minutes, then pat them dry with a towel and let the oil absorb on its own, then wipe off the excess.

Several such sessions will nourish the deformed areas and the skin around them with the necessary moisture and vitamins (A, E, K).

Salt treatments

Dilute iodized salt (15 g) in 200 ml of warm water. Dip your fingertips into the solution until the liquid covers your nails. The duration of the manipulation is 10–15 minutes, once every 3 days.

Massage

Rub a small amount of cosmetic oil or cream into the nails and cuticles with a soft brush and light movements. It is recommended to carry out the manipulation for at least 10 minutes. This will improve blood supply around the bed and normalize the exchange of nutrients in the tissues.

Massage helps children especially well. If a child’s nails bend up or down, you can rub vitamin creams and essential oils into the plate. Massage movements promote maximum absorption of beneficial substances into the stratum corneum.

If your nails bend and change shape, consult a doctor. Recipes become powerless if the cause of plate deformation lies in disruption of the internal organs. Therefore, first you need to undergo a full examination, and only after ruling out diseases, begin to get rid of nail defects.

Important Tips:

  1. If the deformation of the plate is congenital, you need to wear short nails or extend artificial ones.
  2. It is important to pay attention to nutrition. It must be complete and include the entire complex of vitamins.
  3. It is necessary to use gloves in case of prolonged contact with water (washing dishes, hand washing).
  4. Lead an active lifestyle (walks in nature, swimming, running). This will strengthen the immune system and have a beneficial effect on the condition of the manicure.
  5. Use manicure tools correctly, make sure that your nails do not dry out (use moisturizer regularly).

The fragility and thinning of the nail plate often leads to its twisting in different directions. If the nails begin to bend, in most cases, this indicates a lack of nutrients in the body. Such a defect is also evidence of a violation of manicure technique, abuse of varnishes and gels, as well as an incorrect lifestyle. In any case, you first need to determine the cause, and then begin treatment.

Causes and treatments

1. The first reason why nails can bend is their innate feature, heredity. Moreover, when a nail is short, it can look completely normal, but when it grows, it can bend up or down, thereby spoiling its shape. This can happen on one or two fingers, or on all of them at once. Sometimes the corner is bent only on one side, and sometimes it is such a pronounced defect that on long nails they practically curl up into a tube. The most interesting thing is that this does not depend on whether the nail plate is thin or thick. If this is exactly your case, then there are two options: either grow your nails only to the length at which the bend is not yet visible, or use extensions.

2. The second reason is acquired. This can occur primarily due to a lack of vitamins and microelements in the body. Therefore, nails become dull, brittle and thin and begin to curl. Here you should start restoring them. It is recommended to refrain from painting your nails with nail polish. Rub special manicure nourishing oils into the cuticle area. You can also take a vitamin complex. You can read about which complex is better to choose here.

It will be useful to make salt baths for nails. Here's one option:

  • Add 1 tablespoon of iodized salt to 150 milliliters of warm water and stir until it dissolves. Dip your fingertips so that your nails are completely submerged in water. You need to hold it for 8-10 minutes until the water cools down. It is better to repeat this bath once every two days. After the bath, rub the nourishing oil described above into the cuticle area (it is better to buy oils in pharmacies, labeled for strengthening nails and hair).

Bend nails occur in people regardless of age and physiological characteristics of the body. Such problems can appear for various reasons and manifest themselves with additional symptoms.

Let's look at why fingernails bend down and ways to combat this problem.

Causes

With a uniform growth rate and adequate surface treatment, the nail, as a rule, has a normal shape and good resistance to aggressive influences.

With slow growth, its surface is exposed to greater external influences and, as a result, bends. It can become thin, soft or brittle depending on the deficiency of proteins, vitamins and minerals in the body.

A deficiency causes the nail to bend on the side or over the entire surface at the slightest physical impact. Such disorders occur as a result of metabolic disorders, poor nutrition or the presence of serious illnesses. It also happens that when you press on its surface, it starts and happens with the corners.

Metabolic disorders

Metabolic disorders can be temporary or permanent. Temporary disturbances include physiological conditions such as pregnancy and fasting.

During pregnancy, women, as a rule, develop metabolic failures in 50% of cases. As a result, they become thinner and begin to bend, first on the sides, and then over the entire surface.

During the second pregnancy, in 90% of cases, additional hair loss, peeling of the skin and brittle teeth occur. Depending on the physiological characteristics of a woman’s body, the number and variety of symptoms may differ in each individual case.

Permanent physiological metabolic disorders include anorexia and diabetes mellitus. As a result of an acute lack of nutrients, tissue growth slows down, and the tissue itself has an altered structure. As a result, fragility and excessive softness, bends and delamination are observed, regardless of the influence of the external environment.

With diabetes, there is an accumulation and increase in the amount of sugar in the fingers. Sugar crystals cause tissue deformation and necrosis. One of the signs of diabetes is a change in the shape and structure of the nails.

Cosmetologists say: If your nails begin to curl downwards after wearing artificial nails for a long time, they need to be cleaned of all cosmetic chemicals and a break of several weeks from repeated extensions must be taken.

Heredity

Some people, as they reach a certain age, develop metabolic disorders that occur during growth. Also, there are people with physiological characteristics in which normal growth of nail tissue is impossible and requires constant care.

Treatment in such cases can last a lifetime and often requires surgery with periodic cosmetic treatments.

Fungus and bacteria damage

There are many fungi that cause it. Often, when the skin of the hands is affected, deformations with curvature upward or downward are formed.

Wrong care

Nail extensions lead to deformation, thinning and separation of the nail tissue.

It bends up or down depending on the depth of the cut and the duration of use of aggressive substances. Photos of the bends can be seen above.

Treatment

To treat a bend, it is necessary to act on the root cause of the disease. Therefore, the first thing you need to do is consult a cosmetologist, dermatologist, or surgeon, depending on the complexity of the manifestations. At the beginning of treatment, nutrition should be normalized, protein foods, vitamins and minerals should be consumed in sufficient quantities.

If the cause of the disease is improper care, you need to take a break from visiting a cosmetologist for 1 to 2 months. During this period, special restorative agents must be applied to the surface.

Since this problem can only be corrected with complex treatment, it is additionally recommended to take baths with sea salt and rub wax, honey, castor and burdock oil into the nail plate. If the cause of the appearance is a fungal infection or a serious illness, then treatment should be prescribed by a doctor after a thorough diagnosis.

The appearance of the first signs of curvature indicates the development of metabolic disorders in the body. During normal functioning of the body, nails, as a rule, retain their shape.

Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the diet, the general condition of the body and consult a doctor.

Prevention

A cosmetologist or doctor is often asked: What can I do to prevent my nails from curling? And the answer for each individual case will be different. Firstly, it is necessary to follow a diet with periodic addition of products that are unique in their composition.

It is advisable to eat cottage cheese, cheese, sour cream or drink uncollected milk once a week. It is recommended to take complex vitamins and add large quantities of beef and pork to your food.

In regions where it is not possible to eat fermented milk products, the lack of calcium can be compensated for with special dietary supplements or eggshells. Dietary supplements are used according to the instructions, and the shells according to the following principle. The shells are taken from the eggs of domestic chickens that have been certified by a veterinarian to be in good health.

It is washed using laundry soap in hot running water, then doused with boiling water and dried. The dried shells are crushed to a powder and taken 1 – ½ teaspoon once a day for two weeks. Such prevention is recommended for pregnant women during pregnancy.

Conclusion

At the first signs of deviations, you should seek advice from a cosmetologist, dermatologist or surgeon. If necessary, undergo a set of diagnostic measures to detect the exact cause of bent nails on the fingers. Timely diagnosis and treatment will help avoid many complications.
